Darvish Delights in Rangers Spring Training Debut

From strikeouts to fielding, Yu Darvish displayed an impressive performance in his first action in Cactus League play. For the game against San Diego Padres, Darvish completed two shutout innings, with 3 strikeouts.

The 25-year-old threw his seven-pitch repertoire all out of the stretch, and was most likely to allow Darvish to settle into his first outing.  The crowd in Peoria Sports Complex included a crowd of 2,910, with 100 media members, and above all GM John Daniels and Team President Nolan Ryan.

In front of this crowd,  his teammates kept asking him if he was nervous. “And I told them, ‘No, I’m not.'” Davish said through interpreter Joe Furukawa. “But they still say, ‘No, you are. You’re nervous.'”

His pitching confirmed that we was not nervous because he was able to display his 7 pitch repertoire.  Darvish was able to complete the 2 inning performance with 36 pitches with 26 being strikes, 3 strike outs and 2 hits.

The impressive performance also included  two stellar fielding feats, in the second inning. Mark Kotsay hit a hard ground ball toward first in which Michael Young made a diving stop to snag the ball. As Young turned to first, Darvish was already nearly at the bag waiting on him and after catching the ball immediately looked at third to make sure the runner wasn’t trying to advance to home.

A few pitches later, James Darnell hit a chopper toward the mound. Darvish made a leaping grab look easy and immediately threw home to catcher Yorvit Torrealba, who got Venable in a rundown.

His next performance will come March 13 against the Cleveland Indians.

Game Notes

  •  First baseman Michael Young departed the game earlier than expected because he landed awkwardly on his left thumb while diving to get to the ball earlier in the game. Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine said the move was a “precaution” and the club will evaluate his thumb.
  • Ranger Prospect Mike Olt took over for Young and went hitless in 2 plate appearances.
  • Rangers faced former pitching prospect Joe Weiland, who was credited for the lost and whom they traded last season as part of the Mike Adams trade.
