Don't Miss

Odom, Should he stay or should he go

With the trade deadline approaching on March 15th at 3pm EST, the main decision for the Dallas Mavericks is whether to keep or trade F Lamar Odom who has missed the past two games since the NBA All-Star break.

On Wednesday, Owner Mark Cuban, Odom, and his agent had a meeting at the W Hotel in Dallas to discuss Odom’s situation. From the meeting, Cuban has let it be known that the Mavericks will not buyout the remainder of the Odom’s 2011-’12 contract.

Though it has been rumored that Odom is expected to practice with the Legends on Friday and then play with the team against the Austin Toros on Saturday. The assignment is to help Odom “get his legs back under him,” though on Wednesday a reporter from 1310 The Ticket talk to Odom’s assistant and he referenced this as a suspension, though this could just be a slip of the tongue.

Earlier Thursday, the team put out an announcement that Odom would not join the Mavs in New Orleans on Friday and planned another update for Saturday.

What a bizarre week it’s been. Odom will miss his fourth consecutive game since taking leave of the team last Wednesday before the Mavs played his old team, the Lakers. He left to tend to his father, who was ill. But then Odom doesn’t return, rumors spiral that he wants buyout and now the 13-year vet is headed to the D-League.  Odom first came to the Mavericks after the Lakers tried to trade him to the Hornets for G Chris Paul.  It has been rumored that Odom though of retirement after a rough summer dealing with a loss in his family.

The Mavericks could use the help from Odom because on Wednesday against the Grizzlies, starter Dirk Nowitzki tweaked his back and tried to play but later left the game. Without a reliable back up, the Mavericks had to go with F Brian Cardinal and Yi Jianlian.  The Mavericks were already had a short bench during the game because of Donte West still recovering from a broken finger.

The Mavericks now have a decision of whether Odom will be trade bait to help get more consistent offense other than Terry and Nowitzki or try and get something back for the 1st round draft pick that they sent to the LA Lakers to obtain Odom.
